Which Mobile Genres Actually Fit a Phone
Phones are great for some genres and awkward for others. After years of testing, I've got strong opinions about which types of games actually belong in your pocket.
Casual puzzles and card games are the obvious winners — short sessions, simple input, easy to pause. Turn-based RPGs and strategy games also fit surprisingly well because they don't demand split-second reflexes, and a good pause is always a tap away.
Racing and arcade games can work beautifully when the developer commits to touch controls instead of pretending you have a gamepad. The struggles show up with genres built around precise aiming or dense hotkeys — they can be done, but they rarely feel as good as their desktop cousins.
My advice: play to the platform's strengths. The games that feel best on a phone are the ones designed for a phone from the start, not shrunk down from somewhere else.
