Why Some Touch Controls Just Feel Right

Why Some Touch Controls Just Feel Right

April 26, 2026 · Marta Kowalczyk

You can usually tell within thirty seconds whether a mobile game's controls were designed for a phone or ported carelessly from something else. The good ones respect the fact that your thumbs cover part of the screen and that precise taps are hard while moving.

The best-feeling games give you options. Racing titles that offer both tilt and button steering, RPGs that let you reposition on-screen buttons, adventures that stick to simple tap-to-move — all of these let you find what fits your hands. Rigid layouts age badly.

Deadzones and feedback matter too. A tiny bit of haptic confirmation on a successful action makes controls feel solid. Buttons crammed into corners where your palm rests, on the other hand, cause misfires that ruin otherwise good games.

When we review, control comfort is one of the first things we test on multiple phone sizes. A brilliant game with awkward controls is still an awkward game.
