In Praise of Games You Can Put Down

March 5, 2026 · Marta Kowalczyk

The mobile games I keep on my phone the longest all share one quality: they let me stop. No timers guilting me into another round, no reminders buzzing an hour after I close them. Just a clean start and a clean exit.

This matters more than people admit. A phone game usually competes with a bus arriving, a kettle boiling, someone talking to you. A game that punishes you for pausing is a game you'll delete out of quiet resentment.

The best-designed titles save your progress constantly, load fast, and hand you a satisfying little chunk of play in a couple of minutes. Casinacho Win does this well; so do a handful of the adventure and sim games we've covered lately.

When I review, I now specifically test what happens when I abruptly close the app mid-session. It tells you a lot about how much the developer respects your time.
